As part of the infrastructure project of the Mayan Train, the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (FONATUR) will allocate 12 thousand
774 million pesos for the modernization, rehabilitation, conservation and operation and maintenance of the Cancun-Tulum highway in Quintana Roo.
The above contemplates the construction of a free section of 15 meters wide, in the center of both bodies of track to function
as a railway platform; as well as the improvement of the Cancun - Playa del Carmen highway section, which will increase its
capacity to more than 80 thousand vehicles per day.
In the same way, the aim is to expand both bodies of track to accommodate 3 lanes in each direction and replace all junctions and
grade crossings by structures. As well as rehabilitating, conserving and maintaining the Playa del Carmen-Tulum section.
These actions include complementary works for coexistence with the Mayan Train: the construction of a protective barrier,
preparation of earthworks and installation boxes for railway platform, construction of drainage system, acquisition
and preparation of additional surfaces to the Right of Way for the Mayan Train boarding platforms.
Among the main benefits of this construction work, FONATUR highlights: The decrease in Generalized Travel Costs;
the increase in average operating speeds and consequently, the reduction of travel times; reducing costs
of operation of the different types of vehicles; an increase in highway capacity. In addition to ensuring optimal levels of service
for the evaluation horizon and greater comfort and safety, by having better roads.
The budget exercise is planned in three stages: the first projected for 2021 in which 3 thousand 755 million will be used
347 thousand 78 pesos; the second in 2022 with 5 thousand 664 million 524 thousand 314 pesos; and finally, in 2023 an estimated amount
of 3 thousand 374 million 874 thousand 251 pesos.
